The most important factor in managing legislation related to nursing is the relationship each of us establishes with our legislators.
The 2013 legislative session is about to begin. There will undoubtedly be issues that impact NURSES and PATIENTS!!
TCORN is the voice of Texas Perioperative Nurses. Let your legislators know that you are a perioperative nurse and that you can be his/her resource for perioperative nursing. Be the constituent your legislator listens to on nursing issues.
Relationship-building is a process that begins with the first step. Contact your legislator (email or snail mail) and introduce yourself – make that connection to perioperative nursing. Follow up with a call and a visit. Don’t discount the staff … build relationships there, too… staffers manage much of a legislator’s information… they have his/her ear.
Set an example for your chapter members … then encourage them to follow your lead!!
Customize this prototype initial communication … then MAKE THE CONTACT!!

Dear (Name of Legislator):
I am a registered nurse in your District and would enjoy being a resource for you in matters related to nursing and patients. I represent the Texas Council of periOperative Registered Nurses (TCORN), and I am looking forward to meeting you. My specialty is perioperative nursing … perioperative nurses provide specialized care for patients before, during, and after surgery. We are the surgical patient’s strongest advocate. It is the perioperative nurse who takes the time to answer questions, allay fears, and stay close by. Our patients come first. I’ll call your office for an appointment to meet you and your staff. I know that you will be busy preparing for the upcoming legislative session. I will try to have answers to any healthcare questions you may have, and I will certainly follow up with information that I might not have when we meet.
Warmest regards, |
